Program Overview

A message from Scott Clulow, DO
Program Director, Family Medicine Residency Program

Welcome to the Manatee Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. Your decision to become a family medicine physician is a personal one, centered around the whole individual, built on a long-term relationship across a life span.

Our program is dedicated to a broad-based real-life teaching experience provided in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We are an ACGME-accredited community-based program located in Manatee County ten miles from the beautiful gulf beaches. Our program has a 4-4-4 resident compliment. We foster a balance between personal and professional growth. This balance prepares our residents to become well-rounded family physicians that will care for our community’s needs. It will provide the tools and skills necessary to care for our community’s children and families. We are proud of our track record for producing graduates who go on to practice medicine in a variety of community settings.

Our residents are passionate individuals with a variety of backgrounds and interests. Through a variety of clinical rotations, leadership opportunities and local electives, their educational needs are met. We emphasize medical training that incorporates the latest technology and innovations, so we can ensure the physicians of tomorrow are equipped to deliver healthcare to the next generation.

As Program Director, I am thankful to have a wonderful and dedicated group of staff and faculty. The success of our program is a direct result of their hard work.

I thank you for your interest and look forward to meeting you in the near future.

Mission, AIMS, and Educational Goals

Mission

The physicians at Manatee Memorial Hospital are dedicated to enhancing the education of our Family Medicine residents in the areas of acute care, chronic disease management, preventive care and procedures. Together, we are committed to providing high quality, comprehensive medical treatment while fostering an environment of patient-centered care, health promotion and prevention of disease.

AIMS

  • To educate physicians to provide compassionate, quality community healthcare for patients in all facets of life.
  • To encourage an atmosphere of camaraderie through mentorship and continued lifelong learning.
  • To promote self-wellness in both professional and personal environments.

Educational Goals

The goal of the program is to provide an educational experience that prepares the resident to be a competent family physician capable of providing comprehensive and coordinated care to a broad range of patients and families. The resident’s educational experience emphasizes the competencies and skills needed to practice family medicine of high quality in the community.

Residents will become sufficiently familiar with the specialized fields of medicine to enable them to participate as team members in the care of patients with chronic and complex disorders. They will learn how to apply evidence-based, cost-conscious strategies to diagnoses and disease management in patients, when hospitalized as well as in the FMP setting.

Residents will work with other members of the healthcare team in inpatient, ambulatory, home and long-term care settings, learning to become competent as leaders in the organization and management of patient- and family-centered medical care.

Over the three years of training, residents will achieve competency in patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, systems-based practice, osteopathic philosophy and osteopathic manipulative medicine.

At Manatee Memorial Hospital, we are committed to providing the best in quality medical care and patient safety in an atmosphere that is compassionate and professional.
