Healthcare Is a Family Affair for Tom McDougal
October 12, 2021
Manatee Memorial Hospital recently announced the appointment of Tom. R. McDougal, Jr., D.Sc., MSHA, MBA, FACHE, to Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director of Manatee Memorial Hospital, effective August 23, 2021.
Prior to joining Manatee Memorial Hospital, Tom served as the CEO at Merit Health Biloxi, a regional system of providers and facilities with more than 300 physicians, outpatient clinics, and outpatient imaging centers serving the coastal region of Mississippi. In this role, Tom completed a new affiliation with another regional health system, improved employee satisfaction scores, reduced employee turnover, expanded the robotics program and established a Gastro Center focused on pediatric and adults. Before that, he was an Assistant Professor of Public Health at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.
Earlier in his career, Tom served as the CEO and President of Medical West (Bessemer, Alabama); CEO of Springs Memorial Hospital (Lancaster, South Carolina); CEO of Parkway Medical Center (Decatur, Alabama); CEO of LV Stabler Memorial Hospital (Greenville, Alabama); and Administrator and CEO of Barnwell County Hospital (Barnwell, South Carolina).
Tom was exposed to the administrative side of healthcare as a child, since his father worked in healthcare. He initially started college with an interest in pharmacy, but after an internship at Birmingham, Tom wanted to explore business as a major. He received his doctorate degree in Healthcare Administration, master’s degree in Healthcare Administration and MBA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Samford University.
“I am pleased to join the Manatee Memorial Hospital team,” said Tom. “I look forward to working with the employees and medical staff to enhance the excellent reputation of the facility, continue to focus on patient-centered care, and expanding our services in the community and surrounding areas.”
