Definition of Terms
ACoS – American College of Surgeons
Analytic – newly diagnosed cancer case; diagnosed and/or received at least part of first-course therapy at MMH
CoC – Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons; establishes and publishes standards for cancer programs; surveys and approves cancer programs that comply with these standards; having CoC approval demonstrates cancer program quality.
FCDS – Florida Cancer Data System; the Florida state cancer registry administered by the Florida Department of Health and located at the Miller School of Medicine, Sylvester Cancer Center, University of Miami; a central registry charged with collecting cancer cases within the state of Florida.
MMH – Manatee Memorial Hospital
NCDB – National Cancer Data Base is cosponsored by the American College of Surgeons and American Cancer Society, and consists of de-identified cancer data reported by CoC-approved cancer programs.
NCI – National Cancer Institute
Non-analytic - cancer case that was diagnosed and received all first-course therapy elsewhere.
SEER – Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results program of the NCI; purpose is to collect national incident and mortality data on cancer; consists of several state and other smaller geographic-based central cancer registries.
Survival, actuarial – method of calculating survivals that uses all follow-up information, including recent follow-up, for a population.
Survival, observed – method of calculating survivals which includes deaths in a population from all causes; the colorectal survival data in this report is both actuarial and observed.
