Advanced Robotic Surgery Using the da Vinci Xi Surgical System

Patients at Manatee Memorial Hospital (MMH) are in skilled and capable hands when it comes to their robotic-assisted procedures. MMH's surgical center was the first in Manatee County to offer minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci® Xi Surgical System. MMH has also received excellence awards in robotic-assisted surgery, making it a premier institute.

The number of robotic-assisted procedures performed at the hospital has been continuously rising, from less than 1,000 in 2021 to more than 1,500 in 2023. More than 70% of robotic surgeries are performed in an outpatient setting. The minimally invasive techniques used during robotic-assisted surgeries help reduce pain and trauma to the body, lessen blood loss, lower the risk of infection, shorten length of hospital stay and promote quicker recovery with less scarring.*

How Does Robotic Surgery Work?

During most robotic surgery procedures, the surgeon makes a series of tiny incisions in the body through which the da Vinci robotic arms are inserted. One of the arms is a tiny video camera and the other two hold surgical instruments. Sitting at a computer console located about 10 feet from the operating table, the surgeon views a three-dimensional image from inside the patient’s body. From the console, the surgeon controls the robotic arms that are inside the patient.

Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery

Manatee Memorial Hospital has achieved accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) for providing the highest quality of care and patient safety. They've also been designated as a Blue Distinction® Centers for Bariatric Surgery as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program by Blue Cross® and Blue Shield® Association.

The Benefits of Robotic Surgery*

The da Vinci Xi Surgical System enables surgeons to maneuver into confined spaces within the body with 3D magnification while providing a greater range of motion and precision with specialized instruments. This is just one of the benefits to robotic surgery. Other benefits include:

  • Reduced pain and trauma to the body
  • Less blood loss and reduced need for transfusions
  • Less postoperative pain and discomfort
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Quicker recovery and return to work
  • Less scarring and improved cosmetics
  • More precise surgery

*Individual results may vary. There are risks associated with any surgical procedure. Talk with your doctor about these risks to find out if robotic surgery is right for you.
