Program Overview

Manatee Memorial Hospital has a strong commitment to training primary care physicians in Internal Medicine. Residents accepted into the three-year categorical Internal Medicine Residency will follow the Internal Medicine specialty track set forth by ACGME and ABIM standards.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to train professional, compassionate physicians committed to lifelong learning to become leaders and teachers of the community they serve.

Program Aims

Our program is committed to the residents' success and strives to provide an environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, collegiality, personal responsibility and accountability. Our program intends to prepare and develop physicians who are competent, independent, and have the ability to care for patients in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.

  • We will encourage and support residents to continue their academia and pursue interests beyond Internal Medicine.
  • We will train residents to have an understanding of quality improvement and patient safety.
  • We will encourage and inspire residents to serve their local community through their practice; they will have expertise in treating a variety of patient populations and have an understanding of the medically underserved.
  • We will develop residents who are well-adjusted and understand their position in the world and readily accept the responsibilities that come with it. We will do this by focusing on well-being. An emotionally healthy person is resilient and able to deliver the best care to the patients they serve.

Educational Goals

Manatee Memorial Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program provides 36 months of progressive high quality graduate medical education with an appropriate level of supervision. Each year of training reflects a continuum of experiences and responsibilities based on ACGME competencies and milestones.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program faculty observes, evaluates and measures residents' growth each year in all core competencies, including medical knowledge, patient care, professionalism, interpersonal skills and communication, practice-based learning and improvement and systems-based practices. Residents must become familiar with the competencies of training and understand the goals and objectives of each rotation to achieve each competency as they relate to their particular year of training.

The diverse population of Manatee Memorial Hospital allows for a broad-based clinical experience with a variety of pathology. The ambulatory resident clinic experience allows for the development of comprehensive care plans for the management of chronic disease, preventive care, treatment of acute illness and proficiency in all required procedures.

At the completion of our three-year residency program, residents will be practice-ready and comfortable dealing with patients presenting with the spectrum of diseases ranging from non-life-threatening ambulatory issues to critical, multi-system illness.
